The essence of being a Stoic is to be happy in life no matter what happens. And this is achieved by only put your energies to things you can control. It sounds very easy. And it's even easier to tell people they need to do that. But every once in a while you get to have it truly tested. You have the people around you doing the stupidest shit. You have people around you seeming completely off their rocker and it will blow your mind and frustrate you to no end that they actually believe that the stuff they are doing is right or the way it should be. The people you think are in your corner might seem to be on the other side of the world. It's in these very trying, frustrating and even sad and maddening times that you need to control where your energy is spent. This doesn't mean you need to repress your feelings or bury things under the carpet emotionally. It means you need to let it go. It means you have to really focus on what you CAN control, and even though it's hard, you have to let the actions of others go. You will NEVER be able to control what others do. Not even your loved ones. They will react and respond in their own way. Sure you may need to deal with some initial prepping to protect yourself or your heart, but it needs to be a quick prep. A deep breath. A repeated mantra to cool your head and your heart. A moment to be grateful for the things you have and CAN control, and laser focus on that. If it's a workout, you can only control the next rep. If it's an emotional struggle, then you can only control how you are responding to whatever is thrown at you. If it's an emergency situation, then you can only control the actions you take. Put ALL your energies into these things. On the outside, it will feel like you are shutting off your emotions but that's not the case. You are redirecting them to where they will be most useful. There can only be improvements when there is forward movement and forward movement only comes when you are able to move. Don't get caught up in things that will just swirl you around in a circle or that will stop your movement. Take a deep breath. Move forward. :)

QUIT YER WHINING

We all know that we are what we do regularly.  If you are a hard worker regularly, then you are a hard worker.  If you regularly stand with great posture, then you will have good posture.  This will go for all aspects of your life.  Even complaining and whining.  Complaining is a habit and the more you complain the more you will complain more.  You see your body is a master of efficiency and it will find what you do regularly and physically change it so that it will be easier for you to do whatever it is that you're doing.  So with complaining, if this is what you do, then your body will morph your neurons so that it will be easier and more efficient to complain.  Seems strange huh!  But this is really what happens.  We complain for many different reasons.  Mostly its to try to make ourselves feel better.  Its a way of setting up a built-in excuse in case we don't do well.  It's a way to put some bad light on someone or something else to show that we are better.  But in reality is just a bunch of hot air that no one really cares about or cares to hear.  Complaining never makes anyone else feel better.  Its even been shown that if one person in a group starts to complain, it will actually change the energy of the group to a more negative vibe.  And if we know that positive begets positive, then the same work for negative.  So if you are a complainer, do everything you can to stop it.  If you are around a complainer, do everything you can to get away from them.  There's always a silver lining and all that stuff:)

I have been looking at travel trailers lately. I check specs and reviews, etc. And guess what, when I am driving or walking or just out and about, I see more trailers than I have EVER seen in my entire life!! But this is exactly how it works. When you are looking for something, you start to see them more. This is where the idea of putting your goals on written post-it notes on the mirror in the bathroom. It will be one of the first things you see and you will see it multiple times through the day. This puts your goal in the front of your brain, even if its the front of the subconscious part of your brain. The fact is that you see it all the time and you think about it all the time, you will start to see ways to get there and achieve it. For example, if you want to smile more at people, and you put up reminders to "Smile Today!", you will have an increased chance of smiling more. It really does work. If you are looking for opportunities to make money or advance in a particular career, you will start to see more opportunities. Your brain is much more ready to look and accept different ideas. However, the negative works also. If you are constantly looking for the bad things to happen, then you will find them more than you want to. This is basically the Law of Attraction that was popularized in the book "The Secret" by Rhonda Byrne. It talked about the power of thought and how if you thought it, then you believed it, then you received whatever it was you were thinking about. So if it's positive, then you found positive things. If it was negative, then you found negative things. Your brain is VERY powerful. It's not magic but it can overcome the situations that will happen to you if you allow for positivity to drive you. But that double-edged sword can cut you deep if you get caught in the negative. It's not easy. It takes work, but you can practice this each and every day in the gym. Be positive about how you will perform, that you are strong, that you can do one more rep, that you are ok, etc. The better you get with this, the more things you WILL achieve and the more you will be able to deal with in a positive way! :)

TIME

What makes a boxer so good at what they do. Is it the miles they run? Is it the early morning workouts? Is it the raw eggs they throw in the blender? Nah. None of that. It's the minutes, hours, days, weeks, years of jabs, uppercuts, and body blows. It's repetition. Constant repetition of perfect movement. The thing is that when you have the ol' "10,000 hours" of a perfect single jab, then the result will be a perfect jab. Now, this isn't a discussion about if you need 10,000 hours or not. It's about putting in the time to PERFECT something. As crossfitters, we want to get that heavy snatch, have the big clean and jerk and we EXPECT those things to happen in a month or even a year. But get PISSED if it doesn't happen! We forget that there are Oly lifters that have been in the sport for over 12-15 years and still chase their best lift. They don't see new PRs every week or month. It can be years! You can't think about how to speed up the time. You have to think, or better yet, concentrate on doing the perfect movement as many times as possible. You can't afford to get lazy and blow off the OCD-ness of the movements, of the auxiliary work, of the prep, of the BORING stuff if you want to be good. Be the Boxer!! :)

YOUR WORDS

Words can be very powerful.  Depending how they are used, they can either lift you to the highest highs or crush you to the deepest lows.  Think about it for a second.  Do you remember a favorite teacher or coach, or maybe it was your one of your parents when they told you how proud of you they were, or when they said what an amazing job you did, or how much you mean to them?  Can you feel that moment?  We all have that moment where the words filled us with absolute joy.  Then let's take the opposite.  Do you remember someone saying something to you that was the worst thing ever?  It either hurt your feelings, made you feel worthless, crushed your self-confidence or broke your heart?  Of course, you do.  We all have that one too.  In fact, we have all experienced it and we have all been the one that laid it on others.  But what is really crazy is that we have all done this to ourselves.  Yup, it's those voices in our head.  More often than not, they are of the negative crushing version.  But if you know you can crush others with these bad words or comments, why would you do that to yourself?  We should be our own best friend.  We should be the one that is always encouraging ourselves.  We should be the one that stands up for ourselves.  We should be the one that's there to raise ourselves up.  We honestly can't rely on others to do this for us so be your own protector.  Use your words to get the best out of you.  You are with yourself 100% of the time so might as well make it worth it!!:)
