The board is always a topic of conversation when it comes to CrossFit and the INFERNO. In the beginning, Coach Glassman said that he included the leaderboard into his workouts because it pulled more out of each person. It's much harder to stop and give up when there are others pushing hard next to you. And most will push extra for one more rep on the board. Many of you will walk into your class and look at the board to see what this person got or that person got or even just to see how many rounds you can expect to get done. All of these uses are totally appropriate. It's good to have your "rabbits" so you can push yourself. It can be the thing that even gets us into the gym when we really don't want to go. But in the big picture, do people really care what you get? Nope. I'm the coach and I don't even care! I mean I see the board as a metric to see how the program is going for the group, to see if there are some that are having good days and bad days so that I can congratulate or check in with them, but most of all its a blip of data on a big picture graph of fitness. So what do you get if you beat everyone on the board? Nothing. What do you get if you put an RX next to your name? Nothing. What happens when someone beats you in the workout? Nothing. But what happens when you "creatively count" your reps and your score? I'm not talking the wod-drunk brain where you lose count of a few reps here and there. I'm talking about if you intentionally cut reps out. And yes everyone knows when you do it. First, you hurt the whole point of the board which is to make each person proud of the job they have done and foster self-confidence. Not because you beat them, but because the integrity of the board has been messed with. Next, "no one cares if you win, but everyone cares if you cheat". We are a group, a team, and when you cheat or lie to get the top score, you cut yourself from the team. You won't get high-fives because people won't congratulate that. The object of the board is for you to push your best for that day, to be proud of the job you did (whether its RX or not or the best score or not), to bring the team together showing that we are all doing this stuff together and to chart your progress and your fitness as you train. It's a tool, not a competition. No one cares if you win, but everyone cares if you cheat:)
