COMPENSATOR

Your body is an amazing machine. It is the MASTER compensator/compromiser and is working all the time to bring some sort of regularity to your world. It will compromise other systems so that your primary system is able to function. For example, take eating Paleo. I'm an Italian and I love my pasta an bread. We know that wheat and grains have a natural toxin to our system and we were designed genetically not to eat them. Now when I say toxin, I don't mean that a slice of whole wheat will kill you. I mean that your body will have to deal with that toxin somehow. When I did super paleo diet before, say 3 months of eating really clean, and went home for Christmas, my mom made her lasagne and I decided I was going to eat old school style. The food tasted amazing and there wasn't a bunch of crap in it at all. It was all good food: Lasagne, garlic bread, vegetables, salad, etc. Within 20 minutes of eating, my head was spinning, my stomach felt weird, and I felt....drunk. Not like the fun giggly drunk, but the "I've had too many and I'm coming down" drunk. The next day I had a headache but finally was feeling better. A hangover basically. The way I was feeling was my body's reaction to the non-paleo food. It was the toxins in the wheat and grain that affected me the way it did. But I never felt that before. That's because my body always compensated for it and would just deal. It was always there but my body made it the "normal" so I didn't even realize it. We do this everything. Think about your normals of your day. Are they really the normals you want or are they just things you're dealing with and compensating around. You have the power to control the things in your world. Maybe not all the outside variable and actions of others but how you deal with it. If there is something toxic in your world and you have been dealing with it, either remove it or do what you can to not respond to that toxicity. You don't need to get angry because someone is doing stupid stuff around you. If it's not affecting you then let it go. Do waste energy trying to compensate around it or get involved in it. Remove it, or your responses to it, and let your body deal with more important things. Your systems can make your body handle so many different things and make them normal but it takes a toll. Save that energy for the good stuff:)

WHY?

WHY?

"Know your WHY" or "What's your WHY" are phrases that I see all the time on social media. One of the common answers I see is "my kids". As much as that might be true, I think that understanding your WHY is deeper than just "my kids". We do so many things and we go through many different goals and desires in our life. We even have many changes in those in a single years time. But under all of them, and no matter how many times you switch these goals, the reason you are doing it for is always under there. But I think we will lie to ourselves about what the WHY really is. It sounds very heroic to say our WHY is our kids (or something like that) but why did you pick this as your WHY? Do you train so that you look good or so your kids see you working out? Do you eat a certain way so that you will good when others are checking you out or because you want to lead by example for your spouse? Do you kill yourself every day for hours in the gym because "it makes you feel good" or because really there is some sort of obsession thing going on? We get very good at masking the real reasons we do things. I know I have done that a bunch of times as well. No one wants to think you do things for just dumb, vain, irresponsible reasons, so we will sparkle it up with these grandiose ideas of WHY. But we need to truly know that underlying WHY because that is what will keep us going. That WHY is what will take us through the tough times. That WHY is what will keep us moving in the right direction. The WHY is our source of power and even though it might be something completely personal to us, and we might not even want anyone to know what the real WHY is, it is that thing that will be your fuel. Take some time to figure out your WHY. Strip away all the crap you say to others and all the stuff you have even started to believe yourself, and find that real true WHY and it's meaning. If it's your kids, great! But WHY is it? Is there something you wanted to show them? Is it your parents? Is it you wanted to prove something to someone? Is it family history? Is it a chance to not feel like the outsider? Is it that you are tired of the old you? Whatever it is, embrace it and make it your fuel source. But know it through and through!:)

EVERY MORNING

EVERY MORNING

I never really bought into the idea of a morning routine. Well, I had one but it was more like sleep until the moment I had to get up, then get out of bed, make food and go. There really wasn't any part of that 30-45 minutes that was got me relaxed and prepped for the day. I was getting ready to go but never prepping my head for it. When I talk about a morning routine, it's something that you do every day to allow yourself to be in your most ready state when you leave your house. If you listen to the massive influencers like Tony Robbins or Lewis Howe, or authors like Tim Ferriss, they all talk about having something first thing in the morning that sets you in a position that where your stress is low, your mind is focused and you do something that makes you feel good. Many will say they can't do it because they don't have the time, or because they have kids or any other reason. I had those too. But I decided to give it a try, and now it's my happy place! My morning routine is this: I get up around 530 am, I make coffee, then go to my computer and write. Its where I do programming and my blogging. Depending on what is happening in my world, I will get up at whatever time so that I have 30 minutes of writing time. Or if I need to, I will do my Revolutioner and Wim Hof breathing to cool my head if my mind is/has been racing. My writing is work yes but it's like a mental corked that is popped in the morning. I feel like ideas flow easily, workouts are easy to build, and of course, I can get some of my emails and stuff done. Doing this every day makes me feel readied and already successful when I leave my house. I mean who does want to feel successful before the day smacks them right in the face right?? Everyone's routine can be different. You need to find yours. So what will you do this morning? :)

CONSEQUENCES

CONSEQUENCES

I saw the latest John Wick movie this weekend and besides the fact that there were ALL kinds of amazing action fight scenes, the backbone of the John Wick series is the idea of choices and consequences. The truth is that it doesn't matter what the choice is. It doesn't matter if its something small like making the choice between what drink you get at Starbucks or something big like selling your house. There will ALWAYS be a positive side and a negative side. No choice is completely one-sided. It might be that one of the sides isn't as seen as the other or that one has a side that is much more pronounced. But in either case, the fact still stands, both sides are there. Knowing this means you will have to acknowledge it. You will have to deal with both sides. Take the simple Starbucks drink choice. If you decide to get the grande Carmel Frappuccino, then you will be taking in WAY more sugar and calories than if you decided to get my drink of choice (dark roast with heavy cream). Will it harm you today? No, but if you make this a habit then its a brick in the wall of crappy nutrition issues and you WILL have to deal with that even though it probably tastes good and is more fun to drink than a boring cup of coffee. If it's the selling the house thing, then the upsides might be that you get some money back and can take care of other debt and put that money to work so that you can buy another house later. And the downside might be that you might have to sell it for less than you want so that someone buys it or you'll have to find another place to live and disrupt your whole world etc. There's always both sides. If you are aware of this, and you are cool to accept the consequences, then you should be good. Just like in John Wick where someone helps you and you are bound to do whatever they want down the road. It's that easy.....right?!? hahaha :)

SQUISH

I saw a post by a friend of mine, John Kim (@theangrytherapist), that said there is work and there is play and that the goal should be to bring those as close to each other as possible. Basically, not having work on one end of the spectrum and play on the far opposite side. We all know that work is something we HAVE to do and play is something we WANT to do. So if we are able to pull those closer together so the distance between the "have to" and "want to" shrinks, then it begs that you will have a much happier life. This equation works in ALL areas of your life. If you are working out and you are loving what you are doing, then it's not so hard to go to the gym. If you are parenting and loving everything about what you get to do with your kids, then it makes the tough times with them not as bad because you love the WHOLE thing. Or at your job, if you are excited that you get to this particular activity, then it makes those boring days not as bad. And when you love to be there, you are so much more productive. There are two ways to make this shrink happen: 1) you either change the scenario, or 2) or change the way you view it. To change the scene in the gym you can get a new routine, go to a new gym, or train for a particular activity that you really want to. To change the view, it's about thinking that you are grateful that you GET to train. I know I'm much busier than I have been in the past so I don't get to train like I would like to. With your kids, it would be pretty tough to change your kids so it's about changing how you see the issue. When we parent, we usually do it off how we were parented or figuring how we would react if we acted a particular way. Our kids our their own individuals so the plan you think will work may need to be changed based on your child. Changing the view would be to always be grateful that you get to be a parent with all the ups and downs. Many don't even get the chance. With your job, if you don't like it then find a new one. But quit being all pissed about it. That doesn't fix or do anything. Otherwise, change the way you see it. The fact that you get to serve people food to make their day better with their family or you get to make things that make people happier is AWESOME! Be grateful you have a job. Many don't even have the chance. When the distance is diminished between work and play, you are happier. And you and the ability to make it so!:)
