When you came to us for the first time, many of you were terrified about what you were getting into. Were you going to be bad at it? Were people going to laugh at you? Were you going to get hurt since EVERYONE gets hurts doing CrossFit? What about when you were going to lift that new 1 rep max? Were you afraid that it would be too heavy and crush you to the ground? That it's less than this other person and so it doesn't even really count? Or when there workouts that had a movement that you can't even come close to doing? Were you asking yourself if you were good enough to even be there? Or if this whole thing is too hard? These are VERY normal feeling. But just because you are FEELING them doesn't mean they are REAL things. The fear you, did and maybe still do, feel is just a system in your body to keep you "safe". Safe from pain and injury but also pain from embarrassment, or emotional pain. And even though this is a great system, and it's protected us for eons, we still need to control it and recognize exactly what it is telling us. Even our ancestors had to control those feelings. If they were afraid and worried about getting hurt on the hunt, then they didn't eat. The object is to recognize the "fears" that are being signaled and then decide if its a real fear or just a blanket of protection without much backing. As far as getting hurt here in the gym, it's our job to keep you from injury. We do that by instructing proper movement, work for improved mobility, increase learning on different movements, build strength and then build intensity so that you can lose weight, look better and feel better FOR LONGER! With respects to the emotional fear of embarrassment or others talking, realize that we ALL are in the same boat. There isn't anyone in the gym that crushes everything. You may be new to this whole thing but we all were there and we all remember. So you just need to get in here and work on being better than YOU were yesterday. And finally all those movements, there are many of them. They ALL take time to learn and you might have to learn pieces before you can string them all together where it looks like the actual movement. But give it time. We will help you EVERYDAY. We will celebrate every success! Give it time and they will come. So use your fear but don't let it run you. It's just a little warning light. Decide if its true or not and then just enjoy the ride! :)
