Have you ever heard about where there was a car crash and the person that ended up surviving was the drunk driver? The people that weren't drunk usually didn't make it. Why is this? The alcohol inhibits the people's reactions and they don't respond like most people would in a normal situation like this. Most would tense up and prepare themselves for the crash. The drunk is slow to tense up and is loosey-goosey through the entire thing. The fact that their body doesn't fight the collision is what usually saves them. We are pretty high strung creatures by nature. Even though we don't have Wooley Mammoths trying to smash us, we have created a state of constant stress and battle. But what if we used the same basic technique as a drunk in a collision on most things? No, I don't mean to walk around drinking all the time. I mean to not be so "ready to crash" mode all the time. To be able to "stay loose" even when it seems like you should be tensing up. I remember when I wrestled in college, I was working with a guy that was training for the Olympic trials. His name was Murray Cruz. He used to tell me that you can react or be quick if you are staying tight when someone comes at you. When you are wrestling someone, to react from a tight position, you need to recognize the need to move, then loosen up, then move, then tighten up again. But if you are staying loose and fluid and not so rigid, then you can move as your first step. Sometimes the first step is just going along with the flow so that your body can find the path of least resistance to escape. This is VERY useful in EVERYTHING we do. We have talked about breathing to keep your stress levels down. But there also is mediation. There is listening to music or even to repeat a mantra of some type. And the list goes on. But if you can stay "loose" or "not tense" you will be able to respond quickly to most things and it might even get you out of some pretty hairy situations. So next time you are getting fired up, you are getting worried, you are getting "ready" (for whatever), you are struggling, you are about to hit the wall, etc, just let yourself go loose and come out on the other side. You will be amazed at what happens! :)
