How many times have you been sitting there before the workout and getting more and more anxious as it's taking longer for the workout to start? And this is with no pressure other than knowing it's going to be uncomfortable during. What about when you are waiting for something big to happen like an interview or a real competition? Now not only do you have the uncomfortableness of the event, but you also have the pressure of wanting to do well in it, or needing the job, or knowing that you have been training for a year for this one weekend. Now the anxiety is through the roof! One of the biggest changes I have learned to make before a big event is to not think about the event. If I did my preparation, then there really isn't anything to think or worry about. But it's hard if its something you want really bad. It's not that you "care" or "don't care" about it. But you don't even need to think about it right before it happens. Keep it light in your head. When the 3-2-1 goes, you will perform as you have been training. You will quickly get to the bar and start doing reps. And as long as you keep focusing on your work rather than the "win", you will be able to perform better. When I was at the Games, what I did before we started was I'd look out into the crowd to see my daughter. She would be waving at me and I would be pointing to her and smiling. For that brief moment, I wasn't about to compete. I was just having a moment with my daughter and that would take the stress and anxiety off me allowing me to be in a better place when the gun went off. You can do this by joking around, by listening to music, by meditation, by doing some breathing techniques, anything that relaxes you. The old idea of getting over-hyped up before you go, even though it sounds like it would be the best choice, ends up just building more stress on an already stressful situation. You WILL perform best when you can FLOW and the easiest way to get there is to be in a good low-stress mood. This applies to everything you do. Big test? Big interview? Big race? Tons of things on the "to-do" list? Do your preparation and then keep it light right before you need to get after it. Don't worry or even think about the outcome. Just keep to what you will do.
