I never thought I needed that much sleep. But when I get only 5 hours of sleep for 5-6 nights in a row, I can ALWAYS tell that I am off the next day. I don't feel as snappy, I don't feel as sharp, I get bothered easier. I just don't feel or perform the way I know I can, in ANY activity. This is not a good thing. Of all the pieces to better health and fitness, I am worst when it comes to getting enough sleep. I can train correctly, I can eat correctly, I can take the right supplements, and I am even really good now at regulating my stress levels. But sleep is something I just can't seem to get enough of. I always feel like I have things I need to do so I'll stay up late to do them. But then I'm a morning person and like to do my blogging and programming in the morning. This ends up cutting my sleep time down. But what's the big deal? I'll be ok, right? When you are in REM sleep, your body does its healing and repairing. Your body doesn't have to digest, it doesn't have to regulate blood sugar, it doesn't have to prepare you for fight or flight. It doesn't have to do any daily training. All it has to do is repair any damage that has been done from the past few days. This is when repair is MAXIMIZED! So don't you think it's important? It is. In fact, if you asked me if you had to choose between sleeping or training, I would have to say sleeping. Now, this is NOT me saying you need to blow off your training. But if you need to ask if you should sleep, then you MUST be pretty tired. If you are this tired and you train, you won't get a good enough workout to gain any benefits. But if you choose sleep and you are able to get an hour more of REM sleep, then you WILL be able to get a better workout in the next day. The second choice is one that you NEED to choose! Now I know that I'm saying to "do as I say, not as I do", but as I'm writing this to you, I'm actually saying it to myself as well! We need to understand truly how important it is. Sleep is the least expensive treatment that gets the most bang for your buck. You can't afford to blow it off. You don't need 10 hours or anything but you need 7ish hours. Do everything you can to get that. You will be better at EVERYTHING! That's worth it:)
