I have been doing this CrossFit thing a VERY long time. One of the most interesting things I've watched is people go from being a non-crossfitter type to a CrossFit fanatic! They are full blown die-hards, buy all the shoes, subscribe to all the dead lift Instagram, and talk about their incredibly tough workouts to people everywhere. However, what's strange is that there seems to be an "All-Or-Nothing" feeling with their CrossFit. If they are healthy and everything s good body-wise, then they are there ALL the time, like almost too much even! But if they hurt something, a shoulder, ankle, knee, etc, they vanish. I have talked to many members in the past that have disappeared during these times. They told me they needed to rest that body part and they wouldn't be able to get a good workout so they just aren't going to go. This is NOT the way to handle an injury. The best thing about Crossfit is that EVERY movement and EVERY workout is infinitely scalable and modifiable to work BEST for you. If you are 100% healthy, you still might need to scale/modify the WOD based on certain movements. This is no different if we need to work around an injury. Our coaches are EXPERTS at redesigning the workout for each member in the class so that it works BEST for THEM. The intent of the workout is whats important with the workout program. If you have to do some single-arm movements for a little while you are healing up, then it's protected and the rest of your body is staying fit and feeling good. The idea of resting everything or just doing some workout you used to do, like some wimpy run, is INCORRECT. We have had so many athletes train through, ACL reconstructions, Bicep Tendon ruptures, pulled muscles, twisted ankles, back strains, and even had a paraplegic retired officer still be able to do their daily workouts and keep the "good" parts of their bodies working and pushing while the "other" parts rested, healed, or were modified around. Our Program is NOT an all or nothing program. It's a training program, not a competition. So the next time you think need to stay out of the gym because of an injury, just come in a few minutes early and talk to your coach. They will set you up with a version of the workout that will be specifically designed for you and you will still get to bath in the FIRE of our workouts and gain the benefits from it!
