We are very busy people. We have families, jobs, to-do lists, hobbies, emergencies, and everything in between. And with all of our technology, we strive to be as efficient as we can with each part of our life. In that quest for efficiency, we will multitask everything that we are involved in. Whether its answering emails while you are doing some other work and playing a game with your kid, or when you are trying to do your homework while checking Instagram and figuring when you can workout. It seems like if you put more on your plate and you somehow can do a little bit of all of them that you will be able to get more things done. And as good as we all think we are at it, my self included, we aren't! It takes energy and time to make the switch from one task to the other. And every time you switch, you need to go through this time period of the switch. The more times you switch the more time is wasted. Also, the prefrontal cortex of your brain, which works with planning complex cognitive behavior, personality expression, decision making, and moderating social behavior, is forced to split up its work. This means some of the logic and decision making is lessened on some tasks, and creativity will be lessened on others. In fact, doing this more often makes us worse because these reps teach us to use less brainpower than we normally should. Think about that time when you were on your phone at the gym trying to work out. How good was your workout and how effective were you on your phone conversations and texts? I have done it myself and all that I see is I can't work out as well or as hard, and my communications and decision making in my phone conversations and texts are less like me. Instead of crushing both things, I'm just weakly ok at both. Its just not worth it. We all have a million things to do so do them all better, the best choice is to monotask. Prioritize your tasks for the day then attack them ONE at a time. Put your energies, your brainpower, and effort into that task. Make blocks of time for each thing you have to do and in that block concentrate ONLY on that. You will finish more things, make better choices, be more logical, be more creative, and waste less time by doing it. Of course, you will always have some things that must be done together but the more you can minimize this the more it will benefit you in the end!:)
