When you are going for a new 1RM in deadlift, you will stand really tall, brace your midline, take a deep breath and then go for it. Your posture is rigid, straight and tall. When you go to do a bunch of squats, you will make sure you are totally even on the bar and move evenly under the weight. When you come in for the workout, you will do your warm-up and mobility to make sure your body is prepared to do what it needs to do for the day's training. We are so aware of all these things every time we are in the gym, and for that hour of the day, we are conscious to be the best we can, set ourselves up the best we can and prepare ourselves the best we can for that hour. But what about the other 23 hours of the day? Life is really a 24-hour workout! As a coach, I constantly look at people's movements, postures, and positioning. When this is your job, the coach's eye is hard to turn off. What I have noticed is that outside of the gym, most forget, or blow off, all the things they do in the gym. Your daily workout is training for life. If you were to lift something heavy outside of the gym, wouldn't it make sense to approach it the EXACT same way you would as if it was in the gym? Doesn't it make sense to carry your body, set your posture, and move the same as you would in the gym? Of course it does! But with our jobs, sitting at desks, hunched over our phones, and just general laziness, it makes it very tough. I know I get lazy. I stand swayed to the right to "stay off my bad knee" ( at least subconsciously), I sit working on my computer ALL the time, I'm on my phone a TON, I'm driving in my car a bunch, etc. I have to take conscious effort to stand straight, or to sit with better posture, or to not let my shoulders round and head hang and neck round. It's not easy. Sometimes it even feels like its a whole other workout in its self to be able to stand and move right. But just as correct posture and prepping will save me from injury in the gym, it will do the same in the real world. I mean why is it that people throw their backs out by picking up a pencil?? Its because they aren't prepping themselves. We train to live and life is 24 hours. Prep yourself each and every minute of the day to keep yourself healthy, injury-free and ready for every movement of the day! :)
