We all deal with stress each and every day. Nowadays, stress is normal and expected. Our bodies have been designed to deal with stress with hormone responses that allow us to Fight or Flight out of situations with maximum physical efficiency. But these were designed to protect us from predators back when we were cave people. It was a life or death stress response. Today, we don't have to worry about being chased by saber-toothed tigers or anything like that (I'm not saying there are some big life or death stresses that we might have to deal with at some point but most won't have to or at least not very often). Our biggest stresses come from money, family, career, injury, school, etc. Then you can add the things we see and listen too on social media and podcasts or the news that will fire some of us up so much! Then there are the shitty drivers on the road, the grouchy checker at the store, the fact that you spilled your coffee, or that you ran out of toothpaste. All of these things can add up and over-fill your "stress cup". Your stress cup is the amount of stress you can handle before you start to "crack" or show negative signs of stress. Things like an inability to lose weight or body fat, tired, can't sleep, low sex drive, increased injuries, increased sickness, etc. When everything is at a 10 on the stress level then you are constantly in a state of stress and your Cortisol hormone is constantly being pumped out. This was great back in the cave days but not everything is a situation where that's needed. Your body only knows "stress". It doesn't know the difference between where it's coming from. It just responds. So to control this, you need to control how you handle stress. In most situations, you need to make yourself not get angry. If you spill your coffee, don't get pissed and don't dwell on it. Just clean up and go. If you get cut off on the road, take a deep breath and let that person go. If the checker at the store is grouchy, that's their deal, not yours. The first and easiest step to make your life less stressful is to let go of all the tiny things we freak out about. If you can't fix it, then let it go. If its someone else's deal then let it go. Your life is too important to add these unimportant things to your stress cup. The stress cup is your sanity. Protect it with everything you have! :)
