One of the hardest things as a coach or a teacher is that the people you work with want INSTANT improvement and perfection of a move or a skill. Let's say I have a client that comes to me and wants to be able to get a Pull-up. Currently, they use a big band and it's ok but the dream is to be able to get a solo pull-up using their own strength. During class, I might have them use a different scale/modification based on if the workout requires a higher volume or a quicker transition, but I'm not necessarily putting them on a direct path to getting a pull-up. Can it happen over time with all the pulling work we do? Sure it can! But they want it, and want it BAD! So they decide to work with me. We work for about a month doing static hangs on the bar, scap-retractions, ring rows at different angles, negatives on the bar, and some kipping swings. The month goes by and they still don't have a pull-up and they get frustrated. They wonder what they are doing wrong or if this will EVER happen. I have them do a pull-up and now they are doing it with the next smaller band. But they still aren't happy because they don't have it a solo pull up yet. I can see the want to give up in their eyes. So I ask them if they have ever heard about the 1% Rule. The 1% Rule is a road map to achieving goals by allowing yourself to incrementally improve without getting frustrated in the time it takes to get there. Since there are so many things that have to be done to meet whatever goal you are going for, the 1% Rule states that you aim for 1% improvement over yesterday. This builds a foundation in skill and ability and also keeps frustration down because you might not get the entire goal today but you can definitely get 1% closer. 1% is such a small amount and seems almost insignificant but if you take that and multiply it over 50 days of work towards the goal, then you are virtually halfway there. It's like the weight loss before and after pictures. You don't notice the change until you look at the after picture and SEE how much change there actually was! And it happened 1% at a time! We all want those big changes NOW but give it time. Follow all the steps and make yourself 1% better each day and in no time you will be 30%, 50%, 75%, and even 100% better than you were! :)
