I remember as a young athlete, losing different matches and being so pissed and upset that I would be under the bleachers yelling into my bag or crying that I didn't get what I was training for. I remember going to the Games as an older athlete and getting knocked out of the competition because of a single messed-up rep and the sting vibrating through my body. But there was a difference between the two situations. Yes, I lost in both. Yes, I did not achieve what I was training for the entire year. But in the first situation, I was crushed because the result was not what I planned on it being. I should have been in the PAC-10 Finals but instead, I had to wrestle back in the consultations. In the second, I was initially upset but then let it go because I know I did the best I could and wouldn't have changed how I performed or what I did so I was happy despite the result. The first situation I felt suffering. The second situation had happiness. Now I'm not a very "hippy-dippy" guy, and l am EXTREMELY competitive, but as I have gotten older, I have found that when the emphasis of what you are doing is placed solely on the results then you can't really enjoy what you are doing. No one likes to lose, but there will only be one winner, in everything. So if I place my feeling, my self-pride, self-worth, happiness, etc into WHAT I am doing, then I will be happy regardless of how the results end up. It goes back to only being concerned with the things you can control. I can't control the outcome of the event or the situation. I can ONLY prepare the best I can, and execute the best I can. I need to be able to enjoy the whole thing while I do it. If you don't enjoy it why even do it? I wish I would have known this when I was a younger athlete. You can still be obsessively competitive and hate to lose, but as long as you keep your focus on what you can do and what you are doing, and have pride in what you have done to prepare yourself, then you should be happy and proud of yourself no matter the end result. Yes, I still hate to lose, but it doesn't crush me or hurt the same way. I'm able to let those feelings go and pick myself back up and be stoked on myself. It ALWAYS feels better and you will ALWAYS be able to do more when you are stoked on yourself! :)
