When you were a kid, did you ever see what kind of cool superhero leaps you could do on a parking block? Or see if you could walk the whole length of the curb without falling off and laughing at how easy it is? If you were so confident doing it here, could you do the EXACT same thing if the curb you were walking on was 10 feet in the air? What about 50 feet in the air? What is the difference between these three situations? The act of walking along the curb is the same right? Do you move differently? Is your gate different? The only difference is what happens IF you fall off. On the street curb, you are 6" off the ground. Nothing bad will happen. At 10', maybe nothing will happen or maybe you break your ankle or arm, but it's not going to be comfortable in any case. And at 50', it could possibly the last walk you take right? These are real possibilities but it doesn't mean they WILL happen. It just means they COULD happen. But just as kid gymnasts will practice their routines on a balance beam that's sitting on the floor, we need to practice our skills in an environment where we are "safe". This doesn't mean we won't fall, or that we cant get hurt. It means that the pressure of something REALLY bad happening is removed, or at least really diminished. In the gym, we squat ALL the time. Everything from simple light air squats to very heavy and technical squats cleans. But we do these so much so that when you are outside of the gym you have a default movement your body will differ to. We want you to move slowly and purposefully in your warm-up, we want you to do the high volume but light squats quick and confidently, and we want the attacks at heavier weight to be the same movement pattern that you have done a million times. Can you get hurt? It's possible (as it is with ANY activity) but we want you to build the confidence in yourself and your movements that the chance of injury shrinks down to basically zero. We want you to close your eyes and see yourself doing the heavy weighted movement EXACTLY as you would the lighter movement. Train your brain and your body to see the easy movements in every big movement you have to complete. Have your mindset in the exact place. Make the "50' walk" activity the same as the "Floor Level" activity. Put all your concentration to what you are doing rather than what might happen. The results will be AMAZING!! :)
