What's the scariest thing about lifting a 1RM or going for a new PR? Think about stepping up to a heavy snatch or getting under a heavy back squat. What's going through your head? "I hope this doesn't fall on me", "I hope I don't hurt something", "there is no way I can get this over my head", "what if I can't come back up", etc, etc right?? I'm sure you have thought about these statements in the past. We all have. But the problem is that by doing this, you are starting your entire movement with complete negativity. It's not about believing if you can hit it or not. It's about believing in YOU and the great things you can do. Think about it the next time you walk up to the bar. Are you thinking about the bar or are you thinking about YOU? When you think about the bar, it ends up being all the scary and bad shit. When you think about YOU, then you start to think about all the cool stuff! What do you lose if you don't hit the PR? Nothing right? So why be freaked out by it? You should be excited about the fact that you are going for it. I mean how badass is it that you are putting all this weight on and that you just hit a weight that was close to this and got it and THAT'S why you are jumping to this weight! You should be smiling and fired up! You will see many people TRYING to fire themselves up by grunting and stomping the ground. Sure this might hide the voices a little, a fake it 'til you make it thing, but again they are thinking about the lift instead of thinking about themselves. You need to be stoked that you get to take this shot. You need to be stoked that you are awesome enough to test your limits. You need to be stoked that this is TOTALLY cool!! Be stoked before you even walk up to the bar! This is a total mindset shift but can be used in everything you do: a test, an interview, asking someone out, a competition, a new project, etc. You should literally be smiling because you GET to do whatever it is. Kinda like the saying goes, "its better to loved and lost than to never loved at all", use the exact same thing on all these situations. "It's better to lift heavy and failed than to never tried at all". Believe in YOU! The results will follow:)
