Why do you workout? Most will say they want to lose weight or get a better-looking body. Some will say they need to do it to control something like diabetes or something. But over this past weekend, I spent time with my Dad, who is EXTREMELY healthy. He eats well, exercises daily, and this is something he has always done. Sure he wanted to look good too but I saw something more amazing than those basic goals. A large tumor on his brain that turned a very active person into a "stroke"-y person with paralysis, slurred speech, droopy face, confusion, etc. The tumor was removed and literally within hours, movement was coming back. Strength was coming back. Coordination was coming back. It was amazing to see the difference!! I'm not saying it all went back to 100% immediately. But he was discharged from the ICU faster than the attending nurse had ever seen, and then discharged from the hospital 24 hours after that because he had recovered so quickly. Now of course much credit goes to the doctors, and to the fact that it wasn't more evasive than it was but the point of the matter is this: Coach Glassman has talked since the beginning of CrossFit about the Sickness Wellness Fitness Continuum and how it works. The premise is that you can pick ANY point of health and put it on the curve. If you are "well" and you get sick, then you drop quickly to sickness. However, if you are "fit" and you get sick, then you drop to "Well" first then go to sickness. You have built-in protection to your health. This curve means that your body will compensate longer than most because you are further up the curve toward fit rather than being well. It also means that if you do get sick and you get knocked down the curve that it's MUCH easier to move back up to a more normal, "well" position of health because you haven't been that far down the curve for as long. When you get down to it, would you rather look good or be able to battle illness and sickness efficiently? It's kind of a trick question because if you pick the ability to battle and be more fit, then you battle sickness but you have a hot looking body as a by-product! You get both! The quest for a body is NOT health and fitness. That's aesthetics. Looking healthy doesn't mean at all that you are healthy. And questing for a look ONLY, doesn't last forever. Go for the big picture. Be healthy and look good AND battle disease better for longer. Make that be the goal:)
