The last time you did a competition, even if it was the Open, what did you do when you got a "NO REP"? Or when you miss your double under again and again and again? I watch people all the time as a coach and an analyst and the VAST MAJORITY will literally stop, dead in their tracks when these types of things happen to them. At the beginning of your workout, you know how many reps you need complete and you set the expectation in your mind about how you will do. But then these outside forces, like constantly hitting the rope making the double-under take longer, or the judge tells you this is rep is no good and you have to do more derails people from what they are doing. This happens outside the gym as well. You can be having a great day and then all of a sudden you get a notice from your phone or electric company, or a note from your boss, or you get a speeding ticket, something happens to a loved one. These things normally will derail and ruin our day, but it shouldn't. For the athlete, if they get a no-rep, I'd tell them to act as it didn't even happen and just keep going. If they can't get the double-unders, then I'd tell them to just keep breathing and keep moving. Don't get pissed and just get to the next pieces to make your move. The bad thing that happened sucks, but if you make that one single thing determine the entire outcome of the workout, then you get knocked completely out of the game. The real-world scenario is also true. If you let the shitty thing that happened completely ruin your day, then you get the double-whammy loss. Shitty things are always going to happen but they don't need to overtake your entire day. You can still have a great day, a fun day, a happy day, even if shitty things happen. You have the power and the control of just how much that THING affects your day. You will still need to deal with that THING, but it will only ruin your entire day IF YOU LET IT! I'm not saying these things are easy, in the workout or in real life, but it can be done. You have the ability to give each of the things in your world, in your day, in your workout, the amount of power it deserves. Don't let those small, or even big, pain in the asses, take over your life or your workout. It's going to be a good one, even a happy and great one, as long as you make it so:)
