You are hitting your workout and pushing hard. You have that person you "size yourself up against" right there with you. But then all of a sudden, they start moving past you, then pulling away from you. What's going through your head right now? The same thing could happen at work. You are doing your thing, working hard and one of your co-workers seems to be right with you. Then all of a sudden they seem to be pulling away, maybe getting more or better jobs or even a promotion. What's your mindset like right now? I'm sure there are quite a few "WTF!''s in there. I watch this all the time when I'm coaching and commentating. If a pair is running together, once someone moves forward, the other will slow down. The drive was lost. In sports, we call this "breaking your opponent". Everyone wants to race when they are fresh. The fatigue, discomfort, and pain hasn't set in yet. You can literally see the "I have to hold on" look in their eyes until they realize that they just won't be able to catch them and they slow down. Head drops. Stride shortens. The attack is gone. They feel like they failed. They didn't fail, they just didn't do their race. Maybe the pace was just faster than what they trained for. Maybe the movements weren't in their wheelhouse. Maybe they didn't get enough sleep last night. Maybe they have a bunch of stress at home. But in any case, and this goes for training days and even competition days, you need to run with blinders on. Now if it's a true race then this doesn't mean you aren't aware of where others are. It means that you don't let others dictate how fast, how hard, or what pace you decide to go. You know EXACTLY how much prep you put into it, so can't expect more than that. But you can expect to do exactly what you are able to do. This will mean to go at your pace so that you can finish the way you should finish. Of course for a workout or an event, once you get to the final stretch or the last minute, then just empty the tank and let it all hang out. But before that, you need to do your thing, your way, with your ability. Ben Bergeron has said "you can only do what you can, with what you have, for where you are", and it's the truth. So make it your race. But enjoy the race. Don't let the race or anyone "break" you. Just do YOUR race!:)
