I was talking to a friend over the weekend that was telling me he was having problems failing on achieving goals he wanted to hit. These were body type goals: I want to lose 10 pounds, I want to go down a shirt size, I want to be able to bend over and not squish my guts. These are totally valid goals and I would say there are millions of people that have the same goals but the problem is that they are make it completely results based. There will be things we want: We want to win the competition, we want to be first in the interview, we want to get that significant other, we want to be rich. And even though they appear to be specific in nature, which is important so that you can draw up your road map, many will fail in reaching the goal and then actually go backwards because they failed. It's an "I didn't eat perfectly today so fuck it, I'll just eat crap all day." I don't think it needs to be this black and white. I also think that you should pick a goal that is HIGH so that it gives you plenty of room to shoot for the stars (this is because I feel most will push to just under that line no matter where the line is, high or low). Once you have your lofty goal, then you set your road map to get there, it's about moving toward that goal. But your steps need to be performance-based, not results-based. As a wrestler, I can get anyone to lose 10 pounds, but it won't stay off. There won't be anything "magical" that happens either. But if you recorded every single time you ate and how much you ate of vegetables, or how many times you left the bread off the sandwich, or you ate something natural instead of something processed, don't you think you will eventually get to your goal of losing 10 pounds? Yes, but it will be the by-product of eating healthy clean food that will support that. Eventually, you will see that the goal of losing 10 pounds might not even be a goal at all. It might be that you want to look better, feel better and be healthier. Don't you think you would get this if you improve your nutrition? YES!! So instead of getting discouraged because you feel like you failed to lose 10 pounds in a week or 3 weeks, push to perform better in your eating and recognize every time you do. These are the small successes to keep you going. You can't always control the final results but you can always control the performance and the process:)
