Expectations. We EXPECT to do well especially if it something in which we are good. But how many times have you had EXPECTATIONS for a certain situation and then been let down? It happens a bunch. Probably way more than we would like to admit. This is usually because the expectations that we are setting on the situation are more like dream scenarios rather than realistic expectations of what will happen. When we had our 10 year anniversary for the gym, I thought everyone was going to be as fired up about doing the 24-hour workout as I was. I announced it and talked it up but heard nothing from anyone. I expected everyone to feel like I did about it, but it didn't happen. I changed my entire thought on it and basically told myself that I was doing it for myself since I had been there for all 10 years. I took all the expectations off of it. I just knew I was going to be there, and be there by myself if I needed to be and I was ok with it. Then the night hit and we started out with over 35 people doing workouts. There were only 2 hours the entire 24 where we dropped below 10 people. I don't know if I even expected that originally when I had the idea. I expected people to be excited but that's as far as my expectations went Since I had no expectations for how many for who would be there, it over exceeded any expectations I had. Moral to the story: it's impossible to have expectations for others. You can only have them for yourself. And even when you have your own personal expectations you need to keep them action based rather than results based. I think if you change the ways you put expectations on a situation and keep yourself from putting ANY expectations on others, then you will find that you will not be let down by those expectations. In fact, I'd venture to say you will be more happily surprised at how good it was rather than how bad. Remember, goals and expectations aren't the same things. Goals are what you are pursuing, where expectations are just feelings of what you wish could happen based on some imagined thoughts. Keep those away as much a possible and you'll be much happier! :)
