NO Pain NO Gain! Right? But I have seen so many fitness programs pushing how this is incorrect. Of course, their program is "easy and fun" and they say this only really because they want more people in their program. I mean who wants to be in pain? No one does!! Even though the statement sounds cruel and douchbag-ish, there is a reason for it. Pain does bring about change. And it will cause change much faster than other pathways. Think about touching a hot stove. If you don't have pain, then you won't IMMEDIATELY move your hand. You might just eventually move it. In real life, if you are experiencing pain and difficulty, then you will do what you need to to make it stop or to make things better. You will work much harder and more efficiently to make the change. I saw something interesting the other day talking about "voluntary discomfort". It said that since change and comfort never occupy the same space, then to force change you need to allow yourself to feel discomfort voluntarily. This doesn't mean to hurt yourself, and it doesn't even mean you have to smash yourself to ground in your workouts. It means you need to allow yourself situations of discomfort so that your normal physiological actions happen and changes are made. If its workout and body change you are looking for, then you need to push for that one more rep, or add a little weight to the bar, or just making yourself go one more day each week. If its nutritional change, then fighting against those cravings, or making yourself take the time to meal prep. If its school change, then schedule a time when you go to the library no matter what, even if you have an assignment or not because there is always stuff to do. If it's family change, then accept the uncomfortable talks. Know that they have to happen and even though they suck they will be better on the other side. And so on! Sometimes change is being forced and you are smacked in the face and have no choice but to change. But if you want something to change or want to be more prepared for when you need to be able to change and handle it, then you need to give yourself a little of that voluntary discomfort. When you get used to that then you WILL become the butterfly you want to be! :)
