Your brain is your greatest weapon and your biggest weakness. The fact that you can just think about something and have it completely change your entire outlook on the day or your entire mindset during an activity is POWERFUL! When it works in your favor, its the best. When it works against you, it can literally ball you up in the corner. With all of us having such a powerful weapon sitting between our ears, it definitely would behoove us to train it to push us in the direction we want it to go. But how do you do that? It has to be done in small increments. When NAVY SEAL Team members are pushed mentally during their training, it's done in steps. They are built from just being uncomfortable and tired to being cold and then fatigued and then physically worked and then add irritation and frustration so that they can build a capacity to handle more and more. There are 2 keys in being able to drive forward: 1) Controlling your breathing. When you get stressed or amped, you breath faster and shallow. When you can relax your breathing or take big breaths in your nose and out your mouth, you can actually defuse amounts of pain and discomfort you feel. 2) Reciting short mantras, or statements. They can keep your head together instead of unraveling when things get all messed up. These mantras are short positive statements like "just keep moving", or "I'm ok", etc. and you just repeat them over an over. It can basically drown out the negative talk that starts brewing in your head. Just like anything, it takes practice. There are very few people that have a bombproof mental game. For those that don't, you need to practice it. The more you practice the more normal it will become and soon you will have your brain working FOR you instead of AGAINST you!:)
