We all have way more in us than we think. There really is so much more we can do but we have a built-in "governor" on our bodies to protect us from over exerting ourselves. The purpose of the governor is to allow us to have a little reserve in the tank just in case we have to make an emergency exit (more of a fight or flight scenaro). But even though this was a good thing back in our prehistoric days, today it just ends up stopping us from doing much of what we want to do. Instead of seeing it as a reserve, we think that it's our max capacity. We hit the line and we stop. The signals when we have hit the line are muscle pain, fatigue, heavy breathing, etc. Basically meaning you are tired. And it's true, you are tired! But, you must realize that you have more to give if you need it. The trick is to become comfortable in those painful situations. It's learning to be relaxed when things get difficult. It's not panicing when you start to feel those signals of getting close to the line. Once you get a handle on this, then you will find that you are able to do so much more! It might be more reps in a workout, it might be staying up a little longer to finish your work, it might be being just a little bit more comfortable when you are going through tough times, it might be just being able to still smile and be at peace even though things around you are blowing up. To get to this point, I don't think you need to crush yourself daily. I think you need to be able to recognize when you are at the line and be able to add just one more rep. Whenever you think you are done, do just one more of whatever: 1 more rep, 1 more minute, get back up 1 more time, tell yourself you are ok 1 more time, etc. As you get better at this, you will actually be building your capacity to handle more. And since we will always run into some tough spots, or some rough workouts, or some sticky situations that are demanding of us, the better capacity we have to handle it, the easier we will make it through. And if you lined everyone up in the same situation, the winner will not always be the one who is best, but the one that can push just a little bit longer than the others. Keep on building your capacity and just do 1 more rep!:)
