Ever heard about a professional athlete being in a slump? It's where they just can't hit, just can't shoot, just can't throw, just can't run, just can't execute like they normally would. They are not just off, but shockingly off. These "slumps" happen to everyone and in every activity and occupation. For most athletes, the slump will start when they have a bad day or a bad game. They try to shake it off but then they go into the next swing or round, next practice or game and they "hope" that the same things won't happen. They worry more and more and as they do, the same bad things start to happen. It becomes a downward spiral. But what about regular people like ourselves? Ever gone to the gym and you feel like you are PR'ing on everything, you feel strong, fast and injury free? Then all of a sudden, the exact opposite happens? Everything feels heavy, you don't have the push you normally do, you don't have the drive to get you through those tough spots, and soon you wonder what you are doing there at all? You are in your slump. The majority of the time, the slump is caused by other factors entering your world. You could be dealing with heavy financial issues, there could be heavy relationship issues, there could be career and job issues, there could be injury issues. And worse yet, you could have all of them at the same time weighing down on you. This stress WILL completely change everything about your workout and how you do in it. It will be like you are training with a space suit on or running with a parachute. You will NOT be the same. But this doesn't mean you suck and that you should hang it up. It means you need to be a little nicer to yourself and let your workouts be therapy rather than trying to get 100% physical benefits out of it. Allow yourself to give your "relative" intensity, meaning whatever you have that day regardless of how it compares to a good day. Do what you can to enjoy the workout, but don't just blow it off. You actually NEED this workout to help get through the other stuff. Eventually, there will be an exit and you will be back to doing your normal crushing of the workouts. But be kind to yourself and make it fun rather than "must do". You'll be back in no time!! :)
