Most of us think we are tough. Or at least I think we'd like to think that we can handle whatever comes our way. Of course, this is usually when things are going great; no relationship issues, no financial issues, no career issues, no family issues, no medical issues, no injury issues, no housing issues, etc. But being tough is a skill. It's something that needs to be honed and developed. It's about being able to be comfortable while being uncomfortable. We say this a bunch in Crossfit. EVERYONE will experience discomfort but those that can handle the discomfort longer will be the ones that win. You can ask any athletic champion why they don't feel pain like the others and they will all say they feel it but they don't let it affect them as much. They have learned to deal with it and have learned how to keep moving or not be distracted by the discomfort. How do you get this skill? It seems like EVERYONE would want to have this ability because we all know that life is hard PERIOD! This seems like a skill that EVERYONE should be trying to get! But how do you get it? The ONLY way is to put yourself in situations where you forced to push through discomfort. We practice this every day in the gym. You get to test yourself on how hard you push yourself and if you are able to pick up the bar one more time. The more times you do it, the tougher you are getting. The more you will be able to take next time. This transfers to real life. You will start to see issues in your regular life as a workout. You soon will see you are able to use the same skills to keep yourself moving in life as you do during your workout. We can't be afraid of pain. In most situations, we need to be able to learn to embrace it. Each of these situations, even if they are VERY painful and difficult, just prepare us for things we might be faced with later. If you haven't been tested in your life, how can you expect to be able to as tough as you think you should be? If everything is handed to you when you snap your fingers, how are you supposed to be able to fight through difficulty or know that you will be ok? You NEED these things to keep your skills honed. You NEED these to keep you in shape to fight when things get tough. And if you just happen to be in the heat of battle, hang in there. You WILL make it through and be even better for the next one!!! :)
