Reaction or Response. These are the only actions you can have to EVERYTHING. Even if you don't do anything, this is either a reaction or a response. We regularly use these terms interchangeably but they are different. Even in the dictionary, the words will be used to describe each other with one notable point, reaction is always drawn as a negative or angry action to a situation and response is usually more of a positive one. This is true for these words. When we REACT, we will usually be in a heightened state and we act totally without thinking, come back firing, going for the throat! We aren't thinking at all. We are running purely on emotion, fight or flight. With RESPONSE, we are using a calmer and more thought out approach. When we respond, there is a moment where we gather our thoughts and try to come up with the best retort or action to the situation. This action will keep us in a MUCH more low-stress state of mind which allows us to think more clearly and make better choices in action. Reacting is more like when you close your eyes and start swinging wildly trying to take down whatever is in front of your face. The thing is that we don't have ANY choice on the things that happen to us, the things people say to us, the situations that happen around us. The ONLY thing we can control is how to act towards them. THIS we have total control over. Whenever you can, try to take a second and a deep breath and think about the situation and what the best actions you can make are and then go for it. Limit your REACTions to when you are crossing the street and you have to dive out of the way of a car about to hit you. But for all the other things: arguments, competitions, job actions, financial issues, bad things that happen to you or people you love, when things go wrong with your personal items, etc, etc.... take a second and RESPOND! :)
