Sometimes you are tested. It might just be a single task. It might be multiple tasks. Usually, you'll have a basic understanding of when these tasks are either going to time out or if you have a time frame for them. If you are in a workout or a competition and you know you have 5 minutes left, then you know you only have that amount of time to feel any more pain or discomfort from the event. When it gets tough is when you don't know when the end will be here so you don't have a way to gauge how hard to keep pushing. The only time there was an actual event like this in a competitive setting was at the 2018 Games during the Chaos Event. In this event, the athletes didn't know what movements they had to do, they didn't know how many reps and they didn't know what was coming up next. So in this situation, how could they decide how to race? The answer was they needed to KNOW themselves VERY well. These are some of the best athletes in the world and they know exactly how their feels at different times and for different length events. They know where their "red-line" is and can keep their tempo just under that mark until they know when its time to go. Then for us regular people, when life gives us our "chaos" event, we have to be able to do the same thing. There will be a tendency to want to have it over with right away, especially if you attack it with everything you have at the very beginning. You might overextend yourself and be way too tired to keep pushing. But if you are unaware of where the end is or what might be in store for you, then you need to do what the Games athletes did. Push hard because it's a race but know that it might go for a long time so real it back just a little. Don't let yourself think about future stuff. Stay right where you are so that you can tend to the correct pace and not get over that red-line. Finally, be VERY aware of what's happening around you and if you see that the end is near, or that it might be longer than you thought, then quickly adjust to the circumstances. Don't let yourself get frustrated or get caught up daydreaming about it being over. Just stay right in the now. The more you focus on that, the less you will get smashed by the thought of having more to do and being so tired or whatever thoughts might creep in. Stay right here and work. You'll make it! :)
