We know that stress is bad for you. We also know that MANY of us use our workouts as a time for us to get rid of stress. But there is a problem. Our bodies don't know the difference between work stress, family stress, health stress, money stress, relationship stress, sleep stress, or physical stress. And guess what, these workouts that you do DO give you stress. Yes, they can calm your mind, or give you a period of time when you aren't thinking about your problems. But you need to understand that it is still stress on your body. Your body handles stress like a cup. It takes it and the cup fills a little. Then some more stress happens and a little more goes in the cup. Eventually, if you aren't careful, the cup overflows with stress and your body then has to deal with all the Cortisol in your body (stress hormone) and this wreaks havoc on your systems. Don't for a moment think that you will be able to recover or repair anything in your body, you won't be able to sleep, your libido will be down, you will be sluggish, your thoughts will be negative, and you will add more and more fat to your belly all that the same time. So then how can you use workouts to help you and not hinder you? If you are like me, you don't want to miss days. Heres what you do: DONT CARE ABOUT ANY OUTCOMES OF THE WORKOUT. Don't feel like you have to be lifting heavy, don't feel like you have to beat anyone, don't feel like you have to go fast, don't feel like you have to perform. The goal is movement and to let your brain rest and at the same time getting out some physical angst without putting any stress on your body. You ARE NOT in training mode during this. You are honestly in more of a rehab-ish state. So just treat is as if you were playing with your kids. Have fun, smile, cheer others on more, give high-fives during, etc. Enjoy it. Don't push it. I promise you won't lose your fitness. In fact, the decreased stress will benefit you more than getting a PR on the workout. Empty that cup!! :)
