Just because you can, should you? I have seen some unreal athletes over the last few weekends and I have seen some unbelieve feats of athleticism. But at the same time, I have seen some of these unreal times happening with some horrendous movement. First off, I know its a race and when you are racing, then it's all about the shortest line between two points. You can shorten the range of motion with some bad movement and yes it will make you faster. But that's in a competition. If you are wanting to get better at competing then in your OFF SEASON, or when you aren't in a competition, you NEED to fix your form. You NEED to have better movement so that you have strength, power, and explosiveness throughout the entire movement. You want good movement in your hips, proper leg positioning, strong back movement, proper shoulder position, etc. And you want this to be your default. Then as you get closer to your season or your event, you can practice some "shortcuts" for speed. But if you do shortcut throughout the year, then your default is shitty movements and shortcuts. You are just prepping yourself for injury. Yes, you want fast score in the gym while you are training, or just working out. But you NEED good movements. Take one step back if you need to so that you can take 2 step forward afterward. Then you can CRUSH IT!!! :)
