When you are trying to better your life, or just to improve your level of happiness, you will hear this phrase a bunch: "live in the now". I can't agree more with this. If you think about it, the Past is the past and there is NOTHING you can do about anything that happened back then. You can only accept the consequences that have come from it. The Future isn't here yet, and quite honestly, it will NEVER be right now. So it's kind of out there too. And when I say future I honestly mean anything other than right now at this very second. You have no idea what will happen then. There may be things you can control and things you can't but it is all just speculation. And thinking about that keeps you from dealing with the stuff right now. This also applies to working out. It's so easy to think about how hard the workout is, how many more reps you have of this or that, or how many more minutes you have before the buzzer rings. Let's say it's 5 Rounds of Rowing, then Cleans, then Double Unders. If after the second round you are thinking about how tired you are, how hard the movements are, thinking about how the cleans are going to suck when you are still on the rower, or telling yourself to slow down because the last 2 rounds will be worse, you are KILLING any forward momentum you might have. All of these thoughts take you out of what you are supposed to be doing. You aren't living in the now. The rep you have to get RIGHT NOW, the Double Under you have to get RIGHT NOW, the pull on the rower THIS meter RIGHT NOW, these are the ONLY things you should be thinking about. It's a matter of "boxing your head in" so that your thoughts don't go ANYWHERE else other than to the rep at hand. Don't even look at the clock. If you do then you start to think about all the other things. Just do the rep at hand. You will get to the end. The time will eventually stop. And you will have been able to get the most out of the event and the tasks. The harder things get, the more you need to box your head in and live RIGHT NOW! It's the only time you are really able to affect the situation at hand! Maximize your time there....in workouts and life!! :)
