How many of you use your workout as a "stress reliever"? I'd say that around 90% would say they do (not the only reason but for sure is one of them). The problem is that it usually isn't a stress reliever. Or at least we don't make it so. We deal with stress all day long in every area of our world. Whether it's family, bills, job, injury, etc. You name it and it has a stress associated with it. But since our world is stress induced and it's "normal" to be stressed all the time, we don't see what damage this extra stress of the workout is doing. Your body doesn't recognize the difference between types of stress. There is a physiological response and its the exact same no matter if you are in a fight with your spouse, someone cuts you off when you are driving, your kids acting like wackos, you are ae injured, or you are putting yourself through the ringer during your daily training. Even though it feels better afterward because of the endorphins and dopamine kick from the exercise, there is a cortisol hormonal action that occurs. And this just adds to all the rest of the other stresses. Now I'm not saying to not workout. I know even my own brain needs to have me breathing hard and crushing some wods. But you need to be able to change the "purpose" of the workout. If you are stressed out over a bunch of stuff, then you need to workout with ZERO expectations about how you finish. You need to NOT worry about the clock, how much weight you are doing, or who finished ahead of you. All those things mean nothing to you now because you aren't getting any benefits because of the stress of it. You want to remove that Fight or Flight response. You need to make it just movement. You need to be able to shut down all the extra thoughts going on in your head and give it a moment of silence. I don't mean you have to be silent but if your brain isn't thinking about all the extra things then it's quiet. All it has to think about is "keep breathing" and "keep moving". If you did it right then you will end the workout with a smile on your face. Not because you sandbagged the workout but because what you got out of it was the endorphin rush and happiness. You need to know its ok to just go through the movements if that's what your brain needs. Adding more stress of HAVING to do well, PR, etc, plus the physical wrecking that happens just isn't going to make things better. Workouts should ALWAYS add "good" to your world not the opposite:)
