Momentum is a crazy thing. We have all seen how in sports there can be a team that is losing and after the halftime, they somehow gathered some confidence and then score once, then again, then again, and so on until they become the winner. They were able to gain some momentum and used this to propel them from wherever they were to the place on top. Think about the last time you had a string of good things happen. It may have started with a good day at work, Your boss said something good to you, Then you came to the gym with a smile on your face and saw the workout. Then PR'ed the strength movement. The metcon comes up and for some reason, you just seem to be able to move effortlessly. You leave the gym with a skip in your step and get home greeting your family with smiles, make a great dinner and even do something nice for whoever is there. You go to sleep and wake up with a relaxed state of mind and spring in your step. That's the way it usually works. But it also works in the exact opposite direction. You can have one single bad thing set you on a sliding scale in the DOWN direction. In both situations, the reason it works is because of whats happening between your ears. It has nothing to do with luck, or a good day or some other reason. Its how your brain is interpreting whats happing. When good things start to happen, your brain is expecting more of the same to happen. No one has good things happen and then immediately start thinking that bad things will occur. And when bad things happen, then we usually are expecting and waiting for the next one. Its our body "trying to protect us" by prepping for another hit. We have the total power to control this momentum swing. We can control how good or bad we think something is. If you are sliding downward then you have to work to get out of that mindset. You cant just hope you feel better. You need to MAKE yourself feel better. It's an active exercise to improve your state. Sure you can make it nice thoughts and rainbows and unicorns, but it's more about not giving the bad things any more energy than you need to. Keep the emotions turned off with them. If you drop the bar, just pick it back up. Don't waste thinking about how you are tired and have to pick it up again. Just do it. Let yourself be the dictator of your momentum. Make it be positive and keep it there no matter what. Expect more good things and watch them happen! :)
