Why do we workout?  I'll throw "healthy lifestyle" into the range of "working out".  For a large number, it's to lose weight, to look better, to be more self-confident, to fit in clothes you used to wear.  For others, it might be to fight disease or to combat a disease that might occur or are at the beginning stages due to lifestyle.  To others, it might be to feed that competitive spirit.  Maybe we were an athlete of some type back in the day or we always wanted to be.  In all of these situations, the main reason we do it is for ourselves.  It makes us happy.  We don't regularly do things that make us unhappy.  I'm not saying that dealing with cravings when you are hungry and working on a nutritional plan or fighting through gasping breaths of a workout is fun, but the aftermath of it makes you happy.  There is a chemical release that actually makes us feel good.  We are designed to have this movement and feel the endorphin rush.  But for some, all the good things about working out get blurred.  They lose the fact of the reason they did it in the beginning.  there comes an expectation to do "something". Maybe its to lift a certain amount or be able to complete a workout a particular way.  Or even to get on the competitive scene of the sport.  But if these expectations then change the entire perception and reason for the workout, then it can become something destructive.  The endorphin rush gets overshadowed by the expectations, or feelings of failure, or not being good enough, or being worse than, etc.  When these feelings exist, or at least cant be controlled and contained, then bad things can happen.  Instead of building yourself up with all the things that exercise does, you are crushing yourself down with extraneous things.  You aren't happy.  You aren't enjoying it.  You don't get excited to be there because of how fun it is, how good it is for you and all the good things it will do for you.  It doesn't matter what the activity is.  If you aren't enjoying it, all of it, then you will not get the things out of it that you should.  This CrossFit thing is the best exercise program out there.  But its exactly that.....exercise.  Make it as fun as you can.  In the words of my friend and media partner, Pat Sherwood, "The goal is just to get fit, make it the best hour of your day, stay safe, turn up the music, high five some people, and blow off some steam.  So remember that.  RELAX.  HAVE FUN.  WORKOUT".  Do that!
