I used to hear things like this all the time in the fire service: "when the bell goes off then I'll be able to make that rescue." They would say this but, would never put the practice into the skills needed to be good at the rescue. You would think that now I'm going to be talking about the importance of practicing to make perfect. Actually, that's a great discussion but its only PART of the discussion. There are many little insignificant things that happen in your day. Many of these don't seem to be connected to anything else in your world. It could be as simple as making your bed, washing your dishes, cleaning the house, picking something up rather than leaving it on the floor, or throwing away your trash, or even opening the door for someone. These are very tiny little insignificant things. You don't think about them. You don't think anyone is watching you. They don't count. But they do. They are the basis for what and how you do EVERYTHING in your life. To be a truly caring person you would be caring ALL the time, not just when people are watching and it seems like a big thing. You can't be a very well organized person when you get tasked with the big activity but you blow off all the little normal things during the day. To be good at those big tasks and activities, you need to practice being that way on all the little things during your everyday life. I'm not saying that making your bed in the morning means you don't have the skills to do great things. But I am saying that you ARE what you do every day and in ALL the tasks you do. It's in our best interest to ALWAYS do the best we can in ALL the tasks that we do. When that's our normal, then its much easier for us to always, do, especially when we REALLY need, our best. Don't be great 10% of the time, Be great 100% of the time!! :)
