GOOD LUCK TO ALL THE INFERNITES COMPETING AT THE BATTLE OF THE BOXES TODAY!!!!
When I cruise around and talk to all the people around me, I have found that we all pretty much do the same thing: we all try to use the exact same imaginary "rule book" and overlay it over as many different situations as we can. I get it. It brings a sense of comfort when you can pull out the "do this when this happens" check list. But the problem with that is we are expecting things to be the same as they were. My day yesterday has changed the course of my today and this happens every single day. We get info, we try something, we like something, we hate something, we succeed at something, we fail at something, we get in an argument, we fall in love, we have a good set, we can't seem to lift the bar off the ground. These are all data points that we end up using to fill our "toolbox" with so that when things come up we have an idea of what to do or how to react. In the fire service, we would have all these drills so that when an incident hit us, we would know how to do all the technical things we need to do and how to keep ourselves and those around us safe. Guess what, the incident was RARELY textbook. In fact, I would try to come up with some pretty messed up situations and drills so that my crew (and myself) where ready to handle some crazy stuff. But even with these, it wasn't meant to be a "how-to". I would have all these things at my disposal to blend as I needed to to try to solve whatever. We have to do the same things in our regular life. Take all the situations you know and feel free to blend them when you need to figure out what to do next. Life isn't black and white so don't think black and white. The only way you will be able to flow with all the changes and variables that pop up is to not let yourself be rigid. Be flexible in your thoughts. Be like water so you can flow around whatever comes up then you can use your knowledge from yesterday to adjust and respond to your problems today!! :)
