It's all about the response. A response requires control. It requires thought. You are craving a path, breaking a pattern, and defining self. You are behind the driver's wheel.
Most people don't respond. They react. They vomit. They walk without a filter and complain about how they are treated. They see themselves as a victim, which makes them powerless. They become back seat drivers and wonder why they are unhappy.
If someone hurts you, hurting them back is a reaction. Not a response. Coping with anxiety through food, drugs, and sex is a reaction. Not a response. Dating someone because you don't want to be alone is a reaction. Not a response. Assassinating someone's character is a reaction. Not a response. Letting people take advantage of you is a reaction. Not a response. Seeking validation and approval is a reaction. Not a response. Talking shit is a reaction. Not a response. Not being heard (hiding) is a reaction. Not a response.
Take a second and think about if you tend to respond or react in your life, to people, situations, and events. If you react instead of respond, know what's at stake.Your happiness. Without the ability to respond instead of react, you cannot build yourself a safe container.
