I saw a discussion on facebook that asked if handstand walks showed functional fitness.  There was a huge debate.  I think we need to break down the question pieces: "Functional": is it safe, are we made to do it, does it mimic real life movement and do we need it for independent living?  If the person does not have any obvious issues then being on your hands is safe, we are designed to do it (not all the time though), sure you can see it in real life but in reality what the movement is is supporting weight overhead and being able to keep you midline controlled, then being able to move.  Now you can do the same thing by supporting a bar overhead to get the shoulder and midline stability but you miss the transition back and forth from hand to hand.  Do we need to be able to do this to live an independent life?  Well maybe not a hand stand walk but supporting weight overhead and controlling the body id say yes. "Fitness": does it fit in the definition of Increased work capacity across broad time and modal domain"? id say yes.  This will test your balance, strength, agility, coordination, and stamina using a gymnastics movement to increase your core stability and your body awareness.  I wouldnt say that it is the "end-all-be-all" of movements to test fitness but its a test and the more fit means the more athletic, or the more able to do more things.
