Meditation is looked at as a very hippy, yogi, shaolin monk kind of thing.  But nowadays, mediation is becoming a very important part of athletics and even everyday life.  Meditation comes in many different shapes and sizes but however its done, its made to help you "center" yourself.  It will calm nerves, allow you to focus on the task at had, help you to sleep better, help deal with stress, hit PRs when you are lifting, and help you get through some VERY tough times.  So what is it?  Its a way of blocking out all the "stuff" around you.  The first thing to do is concentrate on your breathing.  This sounds easy but it really take some work.  To sit with your eyes closed focusing on just your breath going in and out is a strange feeling.  I gave it a try yesterday during a "guided mediation" session with one of the coaches from the Angry Therapist and i found out something.........my brain moves a MILLION miles a minute.  It was so hard to keep my mind just on my stomach and chest rising and falling.  But what i did notice was that it did calm me.  This is why BREATHING in the center point of mediation.  Breathing will cause you to act certain ways, feel certain ways, and respond certain ways.  So if you can control your breathing then you can have a better control on what your body does and how it reacts.  In this particular session, we only concentrated on the breath.  There are other things and as we get to them ill let you know what they are.  It sounds funny if you have never done it before, but the only way to see if something works or not is to give it an honest attempt.  Give it a try and see what happens:) FEEL THE BURN!!!
